Huge cheers at Whistles

Senior railway people give standing ovation to brave Network Rail man

A bevy of TOC MDs and other senior staff got to their feet at the Golden Whistles event on Fri 25 March, when Mark Budden, Route Safety Improvement Manager, Network Rail Sussex, was handed a Golden Whistle for his quick-thinking actions when a serious injury occurred when he was travelling back to his home in Bishop’s Stortford. A man fell between the train and the track at Bishop’s Stortford station and lost his legs when the train pulled out. Mark, who joined the railway from the military last summer, arranged to have all traffic stopped and jumped down on the track to help the victim, applying tourniquets and recruiting other members of the public to help. Mark’s rapid response prevented the victim from bleeding to death and earned the RSIM the approval of his peers at the Whistles awards.

A special award was also made to London Underground for the splendid efforts made by LU to ensure the London 2012 Olympic Games transport was a success.
