Class 319 trains for Northern

First two electric trains from December

Northern Rail confirmed on 2 April that it has reached an agreement with the Department for Transport (DfT) to introduce electric trains in the North West of England from December 2014.

The first two four-car Class 319 electric trains will operate between Liverpool and Manchester via Newton le Willows from December on the newly electrified route, part of the £400million North West electrification programme.

14 Class-319 trains, leased from Porterbrook, will eventually be transferred from First Capital Connect under the new deal. They will be maintained at Allerton depot.

Driver-only operated by First Capital Connect, the trains will be modified for driver and conductor operation on the Northern network.

Northern is considering options available for refurbishment of the incoming trains.

Diesel trains released by the deal will provide extra capacity to Bolton and operate via the Todmorden curve from December.
