Crossrail 2 route safeguarded

 

North east to south west cross-London line moves a step closer

The government has confirmed that Transport for London’s proposed route for Crossrail 2 has been safeguarded. This will protect the land needed for construction from developments that would either prevent the route being built or would make it more expensive to do so.

The alignment is based on the previously proposed Chelsea-Hackney line, which was safeguarded in 1991. However, TfL has made significant changes compared to this scheme and published its preferred route for Crossrail 2 in the autumn, which necessitated an updating of the safeguarded route. A 10-week consultation followed, as a result of which modifications to the safeguarded route have been made at Wandsworth Common, Chelsea, Soho Square and Angel.

The core route for Crossrail 2 extends from Wimbledon to New Southgate and Tottenham Hale via Clapham Junction, Victoria, Tottenham Court Road and Euston St Pancras. TfL favours a ‘regional’ route, which would extend onto existing Network Rail lines at either end. Subject to the necessary permissions, it is hoped that the railway will be operational by 2030.
