Croxley link funding agreed

 

LU to deliver rail link over former BR branch

Agreement on funding of the Croxley Rail Link has been reached between the Department for Transport, Transport for London and local authorities, led by Hertfordshire County Council.

It has also been confirmed that London Underground will deliver the link, which will extend Metropolitan Line services on its Watford branch over the former British Rail Croxley Green branch line, which was severed in 1996 and formally closed in 2002, to Watford Junction station on the West Coast main line.

Hertfordshire County Council is leading a consortium of local funding partners, including the Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership and Watford Borough Council, and together these bodies will contribute £128 million towards the scheme’s costs. The DfT will provide just under £110 million and Transport for London will provide £46.5 million. Detailed funding arrangements for the scheme are still to be agreed, with a clearer picture expected to emerge in the coming weeks.

The planned route begins about a kilometre north-east of the existing Croxley LU station at a new junction near Baldwins Lane. A new 400 metre viaduct will take the line over the Watford Road dual carriageway and the Grand Union Canal and onto the Croxley Green branch line track bed to Watford High Street and Watford Junction. Preliminary works on the project are ongoing, with construction work expected to begin later this year. The line is expected to place approximately 2,700 additional households within an 800 metre catchment area of a station.
