Metrolink summer closure

 

Eight-week blockade planned as part of Second City Crossing work

Work to rebuild the St Peter’s Square stop on the Manchester Metrolink as part of the construction of the Second City Crossing is set to begin on 28 June, with trams unable to run across the centre of Manchester for eight weeks.

The stop will be closed until the end of August, with the work forming the start of a 14-month programme which will see a new, expanded stop built closer to the new Cenotaph. This will feature two new island platforms serving both the existing line and the Second City Crossing, which will allow more trams to run through the centre of Manchester as the network expands.

The first phase of works will focus on changes to track and infrastructure, enabling trams to run through St Peter’s Square once more. Services will then run in both directions on a single line for a further ten months before a final eight week closure in summer 2016. The Second City Crossing route is expected to open in 2017.

During the eight-week closure, trams from Altrincham, East Didsbury and Eccles in the south will terminate at Deansgate-Castlefield, with services from Manchester Airport and some additional peak services from Altrincham running as far as Cornbrook. To the north of the city, trams from Bury will run as far as Piccadilly with a through service provided between Rochdale and Ashton. In addition, a shuttle bus will run from Cornbrook to Piccadilly.

Peter Cushing, Metrolink Director at Transport for Greater Manchester said: ‘We need to stop running trams run through St Peter’s Square at the start and end of the construction work – so we’ve planned this during the quieter summer months.’

He added: ‘Make no mistake, it’s a hugely complex and challenging construction project, but I’m confident we’ve planned the right services to keep reliable, frequent tram links across the city.’
