Supertram track replacement

Latest phase of work completed

The latest stage of a programme of work to replace sections of track on the 29km Supertram network in Sheffield has been completed.

Contractor VolkerRail has replaced over 3,000 metres of worn out track in the Park Square, Castle Square, Hillsborough, Sheffield Station, City Road and Gleadless Townend areas of the city this year. In total over 12km of rail has been replaced in the past three years, and further rail replacement works are not expected to start until 2018. The work is part of a £32 million project, by the end of which 22km of track will have been replaced. It has been funded by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and Stagecoach Supertram; four phases of work have been completed so far, with a further three to follow by 2024.

VolkerRail Regional Manager John Davison said: ‘The VolkerRail delivery team are delighted to have completed the works seven days earlier than planned. The 2014 programme has been very challenging and we are very grateful for the patience and understanding of residents and businesses affected by our works.’
