Digital Railway inquiry

Industry and Technology Editor Roger Ford to make submission to Transport Select Committee

The House of Commons Transport Select Committee is to conduct an inquiry into rail technology, focusing on signalling and traffic management. The committee will be considering Network Rail’s plans for deploying new digital technologies and how they will affect the use of the network by passenger and freight services. The role of traffic management technology in improving timetable planning through real-time traffic management and how the Rail Operating Centre programme is achieving this is also on the agenda.

Areas of particular interest to the committee include the efficiency of Network Rail’s planned roll-out of European Train Control System (ETCS) and the capability of the current GSM-R radio network. Also on the list is whether the timings proposed in Network Rail’s Digital Railway programme are realistic and how they will be achieved. The committee will also consider how changes to NR’s Enhancements Delivery Plan following the Hendy Review will affect the rollout of ETCS.

Modern Railways Industry and Technology Editor Roger Ford has prepared a submission to the committee as part of the inquiry, which references an article he wrote in the July 2015 issue of the magazine about the Integrated Electronic Control Centre (IECC) Scalable at Marylebone; a pdf of this article is attached below. Further information about the inquiry and Roger’s submission will follow in future issues of the magazine.
