Landslip shuts Alton line

Network Rail says the railway between Farnham and Alton is likely to be closed until 9 May following a landslip at Wrecclesham.

The line, on the boundary between Surrey and Hampshire, has been closed since 13 April following concerns about the stability of the embankment. Further assessment has shown that the site has continued to deteriorate, and NR says it has now developed a clear programme of works to reopen the railway safely.

South West Trains is operating replacement buses between Farnham, Bentley and Alton stations, and has postponed work to extend the car park at Farnham station to allow passenger to continue to park there during the closure.

Stuart Kistruck, Network Rail’s Director of Route Asset Management said: ‘We’ve now completed our ground investigations to understand what is going on underground and started on site to clear vegetation which will allow our machinery to operate safely. We’ll be starting work to stabilise the ground today (Tuesday, 19 April).’
