On 1 June, Electro-Motive Diesel announced that it had been bought by Progress Rail Services, a subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc. EMD, manufacturer of the Class 66 and 67 locomotives used in the UK, has a locomotive manufacturing plant that employs 400 people in London, Ontario, Canada, plus an engine factory at La Grange in the Chicago suburbs.
Berkshire Partners LLC and Greenbriar Equity Group LLC bought Electro-Motive Diesel five years ago from General Motors and have now realized their investment by selling to Caterpillar.
Caterpillar is the world’s largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines.
It also is one of the largest providers of locomotives and rail repairs, upgrades, installation and parts reclamation in the rail industry. It has 125 locations around the world.
