Blackfriars redevelopment begins

15 August 2008

Preparatory work has started on the £350million redevelopment of Blackfriars station as part of Network Rail¹s Thameslink upgrading programme. Work will begin in earnest in October for completion in late 2011 and includes widening the bridge to allow new track to be laid, lengthening platforms to accommodate 12-car trains and provision of a new entrance to the complex on the South Bank. This will give direct access to attractions that include Tate Modern.

Blackfriars main line station, served by First Capital Connect and Southeastern, will remain open throughout reconstruction, although some planned changes to the service will be made to allow work to be done at nights and weekends. However, complete rebuilding of the Underground station means it will need to be closed from 2 March 2009 until late 2011.

During the closure period, District and Circle line services will not stop at Blackfriars. Passengers will be advised to use nearby Temple and Mansion House stations. Redevelopment of the Underground station will provide step-free access at both interchange and street level, an enlarged ticket hall and refurbished platforms with improved access.
