EWS proposes infill electrification

English, Welsh & Scottish Railway has proposed 31 infill schemes to Network Rail that would enable a higher use of electric locomotive haulage by freight operators. EWS suggests that while business cases and funding sources are made for complete line of route electrification where considered necessary, small infill electrification schemes should be considered, enabling the benefits of an expanded electrified network to be gained now.

These 31 electrification infill schemes are listed below:

  • 1. South Acton ­ New Kew Junction new electrification and signal immunisation
  • 2. Power upgrade and signal immunisation between Clapham Junction and Tonbridge via Redhill
  • 3. Additional conductor rail in Kent to avoid Class 92 locomotives Œgapping¹
  • 4. Gospel Oak ­ Woodgrange Park Junction
  • 5. Junction Road Junction ­ Carlton Road Junction (aligned to Gospel Oak ­ Barking electrification)
  • 6. Electrification of Network Rail owned sidings and facilities in the Ripple Lane/Dagenham area.
  • 7. Thames Haven Junction ­ Thameshaven
  • 8. Haughley Junction ­ Peterborough
  • 9. Hare Park Junction ­ Crofton West Junction ­ Calder Bridge Junction ­ Wakefield Europort
  • 10. Altofts Junction ­ Milford Junction ­ Church Fenton
  • 11. Neville Hill ­ Church Fenton ­ Colton Junction
  • 12. Tyne Dock ­ King Edward Bridge West Junction
  • 13. Low Fell Junction ­ Carlisle South Junction
  • 14. Newcraighall ­ Niddrie West Junction
  • 15. Portobello Junction ­ Niddrie West Junction ­ Craiglockhart Junction ­ Slateford Junction

  • 18. Ardossan South Beach ­ Hunterston Low Level
  • 19. Shields Road ­ City Union ­ High Street Junction
  • 20. Rutherglen East Junction ­ Langloan Junction ­ Whifflet
  • 21. Langloan Junction ­ Coatbridge Junction
  • 22. Edge Hill ­ Earlestown East Junction
  • 23. Earlestown West Junction ­ Earlestown South Junction
