Summer 2021 opening for Elizabeth Line

Elizabeth Line train services through central London are expected to begin in summer 2021, according to the latest programme update from Crossrail Ltd.

The announcement follows parent company Transport for London’s stock exchange statement in November 2019 that the Elizabeth Line would not open in 2020, with services starting ‘as soon as practically possible in 2021’. Crossrail Chief Executive Mark Wild had previously given a six-month window between October 2020 and March 2021 for the start of Elizabeth Line services.

The latest announcement also confirms that Crossrail aims to make the full, five-stage Elizabeth Line service operational by mid-2022. This covers Stages 4 and 5B of the opening strategy, introducing services from Shenfield and then Heathrow Airport and Reading to the central section.
