East Midlands Gateway opened

Rail Minister Chris Heaton-Harris officially opened the new East Midlands Gateway strategic rail freight interchange (SRFI) on 28 February.

The facility is located at the SEGRO Logistics Park and is operated by Maritime Transport, being the company’s fifth rail terminal. The first dedicated service at the terminal is run by Maritime Intermodal linking to the Port of Felixstowe.

The 17-acre open access terminal is capable of handling up to 16 775-metre-long freight trains daily and provides storage capacity for over 5,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). It is connected to the rail network via the Castle Donington freight line. Resources include three loaded reach stackers and two empty container handlers, with a three-storey headquarters for Maritime Intermodal under construction.
